Two letter writers endorse Kelley for Council

On the last day for the News & Tribune to publish letters endorsing candidates, Kelley received two additional endorsements.

Thanks to all who have written the paper to voice their support. Just because it’s too late to get a letter into the paper doesn’t mean you can’t let your family and friends and Facebook friends know who you support and why.

Please let everyone know why you support Kelley for Council today and, most importantly, get out and VOTE tomorrow!

Political observer gives Kelley for Council a fighting chance

Today’s opinion column by longtime columnist and politics watcher Lindon Dodd published in the News and Tribune gives odds for some of the local races. He rates Kelley’s chances at 3:1, but her opponent Mike Smith’s at 2:1.

On the surface, this isn’t the best of campaign news. However, Dodd’s reasoning is interesting and the implication, if he is correct, is very important: WE NEED YOU!!!!

There is every reason to trust Dodd’s assessment. Kelley’s opponent is an incumbent Democrat in a Democrat-leaning district. There’s no doubt the Galligan machine has been at work within the district collecting absentee ballots and encouring voters to cast a straight Democrat ticket.

But all this can be overcome with a good turnout for Kelley on Election Day.

Please help make this happen. If you live in the district, make sure you get out and VOTE! If you have friends or family in the district, make sure they get out and VOTE and are informed about Kelley’s candidacy. If they need a ride, please provide it or give Kelley a call at 812-207-3416 to arrange one.

We’re close to doing what Dodd believed was impossible just a few months ago. Your support has been essential in getting us this far, and it is deeply appreciated. Please help us bring it into the home stretch.

Please give me a call if you or someone you know is interested in walking tomorrow. This will be the last Friday before the election. 812-207-3416. We will again be shooting for walking from 10am-5pm. You do not, of course, have to commit to the entire day.

Meet the Candidate and Volunteer Appreciation Event

Adrienne & Co., tomorrow night from 6-7:30pm. If you know any undecided District 1 voters, please encourage them to attend. Better yet, come on out and bring them along. Those who have helped deserve a piece of cake!

I also need commitments from those willing to work at the polls Tuesday. Polls are open from 6am-6pm, and District 1 includes four polling locations: Spring Hill Elementary School, Preservation Station, First Presbyterian Church and Maple Elementary School. Please let me know if you’re interested in helping, where and during which hours.

Meet the Candidate and Volunteer Appreciation Friday

Please join us at Adrienne & Co. on Court Ave., Friday night from 6pm-7:30pm for a meet the candidate and volunteer appreciation event. It is hoped this last-Friday-before-the-election reception will give undecided District 1 voters an opportunity to meet Kelley and address any last minute questions or concerns before going to the polls while also providing some social time for those who have volunteered and otherwise supported the campaign as the election season winds down.

Come out Friday night, meet the candidate or socialize with other supporters and grab a piece of cake!

Have you checked out The Depot?

The Depot is a restaurant/visitors’ center located in a historic building just outside Jeffersonville City Hall. I’ve often thought about visiting when attending council meetings, but they aren’t open at that time. I finally got in there while they were open today.

It is the visitors’ center for the African American Heritage Trail, so there are exhibits about Indiana history and African American History. I was a little startled by an actual sign with arrows for segregated bathrooms. It’s not something I’ve seen given my age. I initially assumed it was a replica, but learning it was real was a little emotional.

The building also hosts food service with soul food and sandwhich shop offerings. I had chili and cappucino which was perfect considering the weather.

Hours are Monday – Friday 8-4, but I’m working on the manager to get them to stay open later on the nights of city council meetings, lol. Getting some good food on my stomach might make what is waiting for me inside city hall easier to take.

I also learned they don’t get much business from city hall now. What’s up with that? It’s like right outside the door. Put soup, coffee and educational materials a few yards from my front door and you wouldn’t be able to get rid of me!

Kenny Martin: Just wanted to thank you again for supporting the Indiana African American Heritage Trail. You are a woman of your word. Lots of people say they are going to come over and visit, but that hasn’t happened . Thank you.

Kelley: I was glad to do it. As a political science major, I’m genuinely interested in the information and history. That, and I’m a sucker for soup and coffee on a cold rainy day.
